Areas of Practice - Trauma Therapy
There are many types of trauma counselling, many may have heard of EMDR.
Although EMDR is a great trauma processing approach, it is not the only method proven to be helpful.
Other approaches such as Internal Family Systems have shown great success in treating trauma or highly emotional experiences.
Trauma therapy is a type of counseling focused on helping people heal from very difficult or painful experiences that have deeply affected them.
Trauma can come from things like accidents, violence, abuse, natural disasters, or other upsetting events. These experiences can have lasting effects on how a person feels, thinks, and reacts to situations, even long after the event happened.

In trauma therapy, we work with the client to:
-
Understand their feelings and reactions: Trauma can cause strong emotions like fear, anger, or sadness, and it can make a person feel anxious, depressed, or even numb. We help clients explore these feelings in a safe, supportive environment.
-
Learn healthy coping skills: Trauma therapy often involves teaching clients how to handle stress and manage their reactions to triggers, which are reminders of the trauma that can cause upsetting responses.
-
Process the trauma safely: If and when the person is ready, we help people work through memories or thoughts related to the trauma in a way that feels safe and manageable, so they can reduce the power of these memories over their daily life.
-
Rebuild trust and self-esteem: Trauma can make a person feel disconnected from others or have low self-worth. At Austin Counselling we help people rebuild a sense of trust in themselves and in other people.
-
Set personal goals: Trauma therapy is not just about revisiting the past; it's also about helping people move forward and feel more in control of their lives.
In simple terms, trauma therapy helps people learn to live more freely, with less emotional pain from the past, and to find ways to feel stronger and more in control of their lives.
